George Santayana said that “Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.” I concur. And I don’t mean the glorification of past and ilustrius heroes; I refer to the reconstruction of how people lived and the reasons for the human condition in those times.
The buildings in these pictures are almost abandoned. Only the church has been kept up. They certainly do not benefit from the Caracas' affection. It is ironic they are located only a block from the house where Simón Bolívar was born, and that Monument is well cared for. It is a symptom of a soap-operish attitude: the underlying message is that only the celebrities are important, and the rest of us should just adore them and identify with them.
Note: I have eliminated the figure of a woman from the last picture.

Con George Santayana creo que una sociedad que no recuerda su pasado está condenada a repetirla. Y no hablo de la glorificación de sus héroes y líderes ilustres, hablo de la reconstrucción de como vivía la gente y las razones para la condición humana de aquellos entonces.
Las edificaciones en estas fotos están casi abandonadas, ciertamente no gozan del cariño de los ciudadanos actuales de Caracas. Sólo se ha esforzado para mantener la iglesia. Y lo irónico es que quedan a una cuadra de la casa natal de Bolívar, y ésta, sí, está en condiciones prístinas. Es un síntoma de una actitud casi telenovelesca: el mensaje subyacente es que sólo los célebres importan, y lo que queda para el resto es identificarnos con ellos.
