Fireworks / Fuegos artificiales

In Venezuela, at this time of year, from before Christmas until after New Year’s day, people love to set off fireworks. I like the colors in the sky, but really and personally, I prefer the silence of the moon and the stars, or a nice Christmas carol. Last night there was a full moon, some fog, and a multitude of explosions of every possible hue. I couldn’t photograph the spectacle because my house was happily full of family and friends eating the traditional hallacas and fruit cake. But maybe I’ll get some pictures on the 31st when the earth will shake with jumping lights.

For now here’s the other side of the dancing illumination: the sale of dynamite toys in provisional kiosks. The city fills with these small businesses, and as one goes by one hopes and prays that they don’t detonate.

En Venezuela, en esta época del año, desde antes de Navidad y después del año nuevo, la gente disfruta con fuegos artificiales. Me encanta ver los colores en el cielo pero para decir la verdad, personalmente prefiero el silencio de la luna y las estrellas, o algún villancico apaciguador. Anoche hubo luna llena, algo de neblina, y muchas explosiones de todas las tonalidades posibles. No pude tomar fotos del espectáculo porque estaba disfrutando de la presencia de familia y amigos en mi casa con hallacas y torta de frutas, pero tal vez obtenga imágenes el 31 cuando la tierra realmente bailará con luces saltantes.

Provisionalmente les muestra esta foto del otro lado de las luces bailadores: el negocio de la venta de los juguetes de pólvora. La ciudad se llena de estos puestos de dinamita y uno les pasa rezando para que no estrellen.
