In Venezuela graffiti is often found painted on the back windows of busses, and has been put there by the owners. One can find surprisingly frank confessions of faith, love, personal philosophy, and rowdy claims about the owners’ prowess and valor. The following pictures show all these qualities.
The first picture shows a testimony of faith regarding the Yoruba religion, Orisha. It is very common in the Caribbean, especially in Venezuela and Cuba where it arrived with the slave trade and today it thrives, not only among the slaves’ descendents, but also with people of other geographic and sociological traditions. The driver has painted “Honor to Elegua” on his bus, and this name refers to a deity belonging to this belief system. One of Elegua’s functions is to carry prayers to God in heaven. He is also a deity of the crossroads and a teacher.
The second picture is a simple declaration of love to someone, maybe a wife, girlfriend or daughter.
The third one is a swashbuckling claim to fame; the owner is claiming to be “Bad and crazy”!

En Venezuela graffiti puede encontrase pintado sobre los vidrios de los autobuses, puesto allí por los chóferes. Allí se puede encontrar notables confesiones de fe, amor, filosofía personal y anuncios espectaculares sobre la virilidad y arrojo de los dueños de estos vehículos.
La primera foto que publico hoy contiene un testimonio de fe dentro de la tradición de las Orisha, deidades que llegaron al Caribe, especialmente Venezuela y Cuba, con los esclavos africanos de la etnía Yoruba. Hoy en día esta tradición persiste, no solo entre los descendientes de los esclavos sino también entre personas de otras tradiciones geográficas y sociológicas. El dueño del autobús ha pintado “En Honor a Elegua” y probablemente firmado su nombre debajo. “Elegua” es una deidad que pertenece a este sistema de creencia, una de sus funciones es llevar los rezos a Díos, y también es una divinidad de los cruces en los caminos que puede enseñar a los seres humanos.
La segunda foto es una simple declaración de amor, tal vez a una esposa, novia o hija.
La tercera contiene una advertencia temeraria por parte del chofer sobre su propio carácter donde se declara un “malvado loco”.
