Saint Martin / San Martín

It’s an unlikely temple. This Gothic mimic can be found in the middle of a crowded and impoverished sector of Caracas, San Martin. It’s called: Our Lady of Lourdes Church.

Someone whose opinions I dearly appreciate made the following comment after reading about this "unlikely" building:

"I wasn't able to understand why you say that the church is 'unlikely'. It must have been there at least sixty years. It was constructed by Franciscan priests, copying the Lourdes Basilica, and it belongs to the Gothic style of the French Central Plains. One of the first priests was a member of the French aviation and fought in Algiers. I don't remember his name now. In front of the church there was a statue alluding to liberty with a Frisian cap, but the Metro eliminated it, leaving the horrible plaza that one sees there now."

Es un templo improbable. Esta mímica gótica está ubicada en el medio de la ciudad congestionada, en una zona empobrecida de Caracas, San Martín. Se llama: Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de Lourdes.

Una persona cuyas observaciones aprecio mucho acaba de comentar lo siguiente sobre lo "improbable" de esta iglesia:

"No entendí por qué llamas a la iglesia 'improbable'. Debe tener allí unos sesenta años. Fue construida por padres franceses copiando la basílica de Lourdes y pertenece al estilo gótico del Mascif central francés. Uno de los primeros sacerdotes fue miembro de la aviación francesa y peleó en Argel. Ahora olvidé su nombre. Enfrente estaba una estatua de la libertad con un gorro frigio que el Metro la volvió ese horror de plaza que está al frente de la iglesia."

The long climb up the road to the Venezuelan Institute of Scientific Research is lined with eucalyptus trees. At night its darkness is suddenly illuminated by the plasma lab with its large windows that show the complicated apparatuses inside in the purest Pompidou style, as though they were part of a work of art.

Cuando uno sube en la oscuridad la larga entrada del Instituto Venezolano de Investigación Científica, bordeado de árboles de eucaliptos, de repente aparece el laboratorio de plasma, iluminado por sus grandes ventanales en el más puro estilo pompidou que demuestra sus complicados aparatos internos como si fuesen parte de una gran obra de arte.

La Peta street is part of the transition space between the Central University and the city. Its many users –street venders, transients, (teaching staff, students, those who are going to the chapel or the stadiums) must maneuver among street dwellers, alcoholics sleeping off a binge, and students that dance and drink beer.

Again, some of the teaching staff wants to do something about this disagreeable place. There are many suggestions. I believe the students and venders must be incorporated as a “university presence”, but under more esthetic and healthy conditions.

La Calle La Peta forma parte de los bordes de la Universidad Central de Venezuela. Sus múltiples usuarios –vendedores informales, transeúntes (profesores, estudiantes, quienes van para la capilla y los estadios) deben movilizarse entre mendigos, alcohólicos durmiendo en la acera y estudiantes que bailan y toman cerveza y otras bebidas.

De nuevo, algunos profesores se preocupan por el lugar y comenzarán a buscar alternativas. En mi opinión los vendedores y los estudiantes deben incorporarse como “presencia universitaria”, pero bajo condiciones más agradables y limpias.

Repression Vs. Freedom / La represión Vs. la libertad

Below I have posted two pictures of dogs. This first one is another fragment of a Cornelis Zitmnan sculpture in the Caracas Fine Arts Museum. Given the limited space I have here on the blog, unfortunately I had to cut it down so that the dog and the door can be appreciated. It seems so enclosed: the dog, the chain, the padlock. It is a treatise on control, repression and hoped-for protection. It says: through this door nothing can get in or out!

En esta entrega que puesto dos fotos de perros. La primera es otra foto de un fragmento de una obra de Cornelis Zitman que puede encontrarse en el Museo de Bellas Artes en Caracas. Dado el espacio que tengo aquí en el blog para reproducir esta imagen, desafortunadamente tuve que recortarla para resaltar la perra y la puerta. Me parece una figura tan cerrada: la perra, su cadena, el candado. Es un tratado de un mecanismo de control de miedos, de represión y de pretendida protección. Dice: ¡Por esta puerta ni entra ni sale nada!

Look at the difference: these dogs in Marisol`s sculpture in the plaza of the Venezuelan Scientific Research Institute are at peace. They are the free companions of their human partners.

Church in Los Teques / Iglesia en Los Teques

This church is located about a block from the Guicaipuro Plaza. The town is cramed with cars and street venders, and the air shouldn't be consumed for more than an hour. But this little construction looks peaceful there on its corner.

I took an unwanted shadow off the facade.

Esta iglesia queda a una cuadra de la Plaza Guicaipuro. El pueblo está congestionado con vendedores y carros, y el aire no puede respirarse debido a todos los humos, pero esta pequeña construcción se ve como quieta y agradable.

Eliminé una sobra indeseada de la fachada.
